About the museum
The Musée communal de Huy is housed in the former convent of the Friars Minor, rebuilt in the Mosan style in the 17th century. Franciscans settled near the church of Saint-Jacques-au-Tilleul around 1230; the conventual buildings were rebuilt in the 17th century, as the dated anchors on the cloister galleries attest. Abandoned by the monks at the Revolution, the complex then housed a gendarmerie and various other functions before being acquired by the City of Huy in 1872.
The museum covers all the activities of the people of Huy from prehistory to the present day. It is particularly devoted to fine arts and decorative arts, and also presents archaeological and ethnographic objects as well as items relating to industrial archaeology. Ten renovated rooms evoke, among other things, the charter of liberties of 1066, the faience of Andenne and Huy, pewter and silverware, the city of Huy through the ages, archaeological discoveries (Merovingian period), viticulture, folklore, the metal industry and reconstructed interiors.
The last room is dedicated to three painters from Huy: Émile Delpérée, Isidore Lecrenier and Victor Thise. The exhibition hall “Le Nouvel Essor” hosts temporary exhibitions. Admission to the museum is free.
