About the museum

The Braemhuis is the home and studio that architect and urban planner Renaat Braem (1910–2001) had built for himself and his wife Elza Severin in Deurne. He began the design in 1955; construction ran from 1957 to early 1958. Braem, a pupil of Le Corbusier, lived and worked there until 1997. The house is a sober, modest design in which space, light and colour are central, and it was protected as a monument in 1995.

In 1999 Braem gave the house to the Flemish Community. It was renovated between 2000 and 2002 and has been a house museum since 2003, where the interior, the architectural archive, letters and photographs can be seen. Since 2024 Herita has been working with the City of Antwerp to open the house to the public, and is also investigating the restoration needs of the building.

The house still looks as it did when Braem lived there. His letters lie on the desk, his books are on the shelves, and the studio keeps his samples and materials, alongside the many personal objects that he and his wife collected. In this way it gives a picture of the place where Braem and his team designed many recognisable buildings and social housing projects.
