About the museum
The VolXmuseum was set up in 1974 by a group of enthusiastic volunteers. They had collected finds from excavations at the medieval Gallifort castle in Deurne-Noord, and these were given a home in a group of small workers’ cottages on Koraalplaats, in a narrow street beside the Turnhoutsebaan. The museum is run by the vzw Turninum Volksmuseum Deurne. The name VolXmuseum refers to the history of the people of Deurne; the X expresses connection and stands for the unknown in mathematics.
The many small rooms in the centuries-old buildings mainly show the life and work of ordinary people in Deurne around 1900. In an old workers’ home, where six families lived around 1900 without running water, gas or electricity, you can visit a pump house, a living room, a mourning room and a working-class café. There is also an old classroom and objects from the rich associational life of the village.
The archaeology and history collection tells the story of Deurne through finds from the soil of Deurne and the surrounding area, from the Ice Age to the Middle Ages. At the back stands a brick wagon forge from 1928, where the Vermeiren brothers made carts and carriages, with a craft loft in the attic. At number 9 you will find the Schildersmuseum, a museum about decorative painters, housed in an old chemist’s shop.
Since September 2026, QR codes in the theme rooms, the forge and the craft loft give more explanation about objects and customs.
