About the museum

Museum Cabour lies on the edge of the Cabourduinen in Adinkerke (De Panne), a site with a long military history. In 1915, a military hospital with nineteen pavilions and around 500 beds was set up here; until 1917, more than 2,500 soldiers were treated. It then became a general hospital until it closed in February 1920.

In 1971, the municipality of De Panne took on the patronage of the 2nd Lancers Regiment, founded in 1830, which merged with the 4th Lancers Regiment in 1994. When the regiment was disbanded in 2010, its heritage was divided among the patron towns. The purchase of the collection of collector Robert Moeyaert was also important for the museum.

Through objects, texts and touchscreens, the museum today tells the story of the Second World War in the region, with, among other things, Operation Dynamo, the construction of the Atlantic Wall, the Winterhulp, the establishment of a Sperrgebiet and the refugee flows. A second section is devoted to the history of the 2nd Lancers Regiment. The museum is the gateway to the Cabour estate.
