About the museum
Retrohuis De Viswinkel is a small museum on the fishing past of De Panne. The municipality was founded by fishermen, but after the Second World War commercial fishing disappeared for lack of a harbour, and with it the typical boat types. The museum tries to preserve this heritage as well as it can.
It is housed in the old fish shop of Georges Van Zeebrouck on Kasteelstraat. The shop opened in 1949 in a fishermen's cottage and moved to its present location in the 1950s. Next to the fish shop there was a small smokehouse and an ice sales point; the ice factory also used the building for storage. The two fishermen's cottages were built around 1920 and later merged into a garage and shop. The shop window can always be seen from the street.
The retrohuis opened in 2012. It is run by volunteers of the maritime heritage association Panneboot P1, who also maintain the fishing boat P.1 Scharbillie and are building a replica of a pannepot. The collection consists of the shop fittings, ship models, objects and a photo collection; work on the replica is under way in the inner courtyard.
