About the museum
The Museum van de Dynastie en België (Museum of the Dynasty and Belgium) in Herderen, a sub-municipality of Riemst, officially opened on 7 September 2002, the birthday of the late King Baudouin. It was opened by the Flemish Minister-President Patrick Dewael and the mayor of Riemst. The museum is housed in a hall measuring 12 by 24 metres, in which the chairman of the vzw Monarchie had previously kept his collection of fire engines, historic tractors and motorcycles.
On two floors about 350 square metres are set up for the museum. Using photos, magazines, weeklies and illustrations, you take a walk through the history of Belgium and the royal house. At the entrance, the gun turret of a howitzer stands out; it is on loan from the Koninklijk Legermuseum (Royal Army Museum).
The collection includes uniforms of, among others, Defence, the Rijkswacht (former Belgian gendarmerie), the police, justice, railways and post; metal boxes with images of the royal family, medals, helmets and kepis of European armies, weapons and equipment from the Second World War, and a period from the history of the Belgian armed forces in Germany. On the ground floor there is a meeting room for the activities of the association’s approximately 75 members.
