About the museum
The Vlaams Tram- en Autobusmuseum, or VlaTAM for short, started as an initiative of De Lijn. The vzw VlaTAM was founded on 15 January 1999 and manages and maintains the Groenenhoek tram depot in Berchem. The museum preserves documents, photos, publications, objects and archives from transport companies.
Since 1873, public transport in Flanders has been provided by various companies. From the 1960s onwards, representative vehicles were rescued from the scrapyard. The collection consists of three parts: trams and buses from Antwerp, vehicles from Ghent and vehicles of the Nationale Maatschappij van Buurtspoorwegen. In addition, there are buses from private operators.
The protected tram depot dating from 1912 houses more than 55 vehicles from the period 1873 to the present. Highlights include Antwerp's first electric tram from 1900, a steam tram and the only surviving gyrobus in the world, a bus that runs on a flywheel. Some of the vehicles still run and can be deployed on the Antwerp tram network. The documentation centre is accessible to researchers on request.
