About the museum

The Church of sv. Marije Milosne with the Dominican monastery was built in the 15th century on the Glavica peninsula at the eastern entrance to Bol, on the site of a late antique castle and bishop’s palace mentioned in a charter of 1184. For centuries it was an important spiritual and cultural centre of the island of Brač.

The monastery museum was founded on the 500th anniversary of the monastery and, after extensive renovation, reopened in 2021 to mark the 800th anniversary of the arrival of the Dominicans in Croatia. It is spread over three floors: on the ground floor are amphorae and archaeological finds from the Adriatic, while the main collection comprises works by Venetian masters and donations from families from Bol.

The collection includes silver liturgical vessels from the 16th to 19th centuries, liturgical books, vestments, manuscripts, documents and codices, Glagolitic printed books, and a numismatic collection with rare examples of ancient coins. The new display also presents the votive gifts of the faithful of Bol, the so-called Gospino zlato (Gold of Our Lady), as well as rare furniture from nearby hermitage monasteries. From the monastery there is a view over the Adriatic and the island of Hvar.
