About the museum
The museum collects and preserves the folk material culture of the Buje area. It is located in a historic building on the main town square, next to the entrance to the old town centre. The building stands above a passageway, beside the second town gate, which was part of the last defensive wall of the 17th century.
After a renovation at the end of the 1960s the museum opened in 1970 with a permanent exhibition of 186 objects, shaped by staff of the Etnografskog muzeja Istre iz Pazina (Ethnographic Museum of Istria in Pazin). Four floors show the interior of a traditional Istrian house with a kitchen, a bedroom and a weaving workshop. On the ground floor there are rustic reconstructions of agricultural and craft spaces, such as an olive-processing room and a forge; on the upper floor, decorated chests and occasional exhibitions are displayed.
