About the museum
The idea of a salt-making museum arose in the early 1960s, even before the closure of the salt pans at Fontanigge (Sečovlje Salina) and at Fazan near Lucija. The first director of the Pomorski muzej Piran (Maritime Museum Piran), Miroslav Pahor, wanted to set it up in Strunjan; after his death the idea was carried on by the ethnologist Zora Žagar and colleagues from the Piran institute for the protection of cultural and natural heritage.
The location in the south-western part of Fontanigge by the Giassi canal was chosen because of the preserved building heritage, good accessibility by land and sea, and because it did not encroach on the deeper area of the salt pans. The museum comprises four restored salt-workers' houses. After the war one of them served as a salt store, while in the other three the salt-worker families lived upstairs.
Today the houses present, with objects and written and pictorial sources, the history of the salt pans and the way of life and work of the salt workers. In front of the houses the restored salt basins (solni fond) can be seen. The museum is a detached unit of the Pomorski muzej “Sergej Mašera” Piran and lies in the Sečovlje Salina Nature Park.
