About the museum
The gallery opened in 1997 in a house on Držićeva poljana, opposite the cathedral and next to Knežev dvor (Rector’s Palace). It was set up as a memorial to the American diplomat Ronald Brown, who died in 1996 in an air crash on his way to Dubrovnik. After the Croatian War of Independence, the Government of the Republic of Croatia restored the house. In 2005 the City of Dubrovnik made it available to the Umjetnička galerija Dubrovnik.
The permanent display, set up in 2013, presents works by three Dubrovnik painters: Ivo Dulčić (1916–1975), Antun Masle (1919–1967) and Đuro Pulitika (1922–2006). Dulčić is known for quick brushwork and refined texture, Masle for thick layers of paint resembling a child’s drawing, and Pulitika for strong colours and flat, monumental forms. Their works are also shown between exhibitions by other artists.
On the second floor, exhibitions by artists with different approaches are held, mostly accompanied by a catalogue.
