About the museum
The Kulturno-povijesni muzej Dubrovačkih muzeja (Cultural-Historical Museum of the Dubrovnik Museums) is housed in the Knežev dvor (Rector’s Palace), the seat of government and residence of the Rector of the Republic of Ragusa. The museum traces its roots to the Domorodni muzej (Native Museum), the predecessor of today’s Dubrovnik Museums, which was founded in 1872 at the initiative of the Chamber of Commerce and the Municipal Council and opened to the public in 1873. Its core was a rich natural history collection, around which cultural, historical, archaeological and folk craft collections were built.
The permanent display aims to evoke the authentic space of historical events, and uses artworks from the collections to present the rich cultural, artistic and historical heritage of the Republic of Ragusa. The holdings include a numismatic collection, documents, photographs, prints, icons, ceramics and porcelain, metalwork, furniture, weapons, paintings, glass and textiles, as well as the Ivo Vojnović collection.
The palace also hosts exhibitions and concerts in its music hall; a free multimedia audio guide is available for visitors.
