About the museum
Following a decision of the government of the Republic of Ragusa in 1546, Jews were allowed to settle within the city walls, which officially established the Dubrovnik ghetto in Žudioska Street. One of the houses was converted into a synagogue in 1652.
Its Baroque interior has been preserved with only minor alterations, which is why it counts among the oldest synagogues in Europe. On the first floor is a museum with religious objects, archival documents and, above all, Torah scrolls from the 13th to 17th centuries, which bear witness to six centuries of the history of the Dubrovnik Jewish community.
The Dubrovnik Jewish community also has a cemetery in Boninovo and a small Jewish fountain at Pile.
