About the museum
The gallery has operated since 1939 as one of the departments of the Gradski muzej Varaždin. It was originally called the Galerija starih i novih majstora (Gallery of Old and New Masters) and today bears the name Galerija umjetnina. Its holdings number more than 5,300 works, distributed across ten collections, and it is housed on the upper floor of the Baroque Palača Sermage.
On the same floor, two permanent displays alternate. The first, the display of Old Masters, comprises works by Croatian and foreign artists from the 15th to the end of the 19th century; its core is Baroque painting, especially Dutch and Italian, alongside Biedermeier and art of the second half of the 19th century. The second, the display of Croatian masters of the 20th and 21st centuries, was created at the end of 2006 through systematic purchases of Croatian art and shows some one hundred works by eighty-one artists. Among the most valuable works is “Žitna Madona” (Grain Madonna), a 15th-century tempera on wood by an unknown master, one of some eighty European depictions of the Virgin in a dress of grain. Vlaho Bukovac, Ivan Meštrović, Miroslav Kraljević, Josip Račić, Ljubo Babić, Vladimir Becić, Miljenko Stančić and others are also represented. Because of the limited space, one of the displays is occasionally closed to make room for temporary exhibitions.
