About the museum
The intangible heritage museum “Riznica Međimurja” is housed in the revitalised fortification of the Zrinski family's Stari grad (Old Castle) in Čakovec and is part of the Muzej Međimurja Čakovec. It shows that the story of intangible culture is not complete without people: the bearers of skills and crafts who keep that knowledge alive and pass it on.
The permanent display “Minijature” is dedicated to the intangible and orally transmitted heritage of Međimurje: traditional crafts, social practices, rites and festivities, and everyday cultural assets. The display “Stoljeća utvrde” on the ground floor focuses on the Čakovec Old Castle itself: its defence system, the development of weapons and equipment, the dungeons and life in the fortress. It also presents the military campaigns of the feudal lords of Međimurje and the defence system on the River Mura.
The museum is accessible for people with disabilities: height differences are bridged by ramps, there is a lift and two platform lifts, the toilets are adapted, and guiding lines for blind and partially sighted visitors are installed. An audio guide for the displays is available in several languages.
