About the museum
From the very beginning, members of the Prvi hrvatski dobrovoljni vatrogasni zbor (First Croatian Volunteer Fire Brigade), founded in Varaždin in 1864, collected material on Varaždin and Croatian firefighting. They first exhibited it in 1966, in an archive and museum collection within the fire hall.
Because the collection had grown, the newly built Muzej hrvatskog vatrogastva, with around 700 objects, mostly from the firefighting history of the Varaždin region, was opened on 19 June 1994, on the 130th anniversary of the founding of the brigade. The renovated building with a new permanent display opened on 13 June 2014, on the 150th anniversary of the brigade.
The museum now occupies around 400 m² on the ground floor and the first floor. The collection holds around 1,200 objects, and around 300 of them are in the permanent display. On the upper floor are documents, photographs, literature, helmets and flags that trace the First Croatian Volunteer Fire Brigade, the Hrvatska vatrogasna zajednica (Croatian Firefighters’ Association) and the development of firefighting from the first written traces to modern organisation. On the ground floor is the technical side of firefighting: hand-operated fire pumps, hand-drawn fire carts, motor pumps, personal protective equipment and fittings that show the development of firefighting technology from the second half of the 19th century.
