About the museum
The Museum of Angels in Varaždin opened on 13 May 2011 on the initiative of the painter Željko Prstec, who for almost three decades has painted the motif of the angel in a baroque atmosphere. Prstec gave his home town the designation “the town where angels sleep”, and the museum is the first thematic museum of its kind in this region.
Alongside the permanent display of Željko Prstec’s original works, the museum keeps a collection of angels donated by people from all over the world. The collection today numbers roughly a thousand pieces and is shown as part of the independent exhibition “Anđeli cijeloga svijeta” (Angels of the World). The objects come from many countries, among them the USA, Argentina, Germany, Portugal, Scotland, Japan and Singapore.
An integral part of the museum is the courtyard with the artistic installation “Rajski vrt” (Paradise Garden) and angel installations in the historic core of Varaždin, among them “Anđelinjak” at the foot of the tower of the Franciscan church. Every year the museum organises a short-story competition and holds art and creative workshops.
