About the museum
The Gradski muzej Drniš was founded in 1960, mainly thanks to Nikola Adžija (1875–1972), who provided space for the first collection in his birth house. At Adžija’s request, Ivan Meštrović (1883–1962) donated about 30 works to the museum, among them 17 sculptures and 8 paintings.
In 1971 the museum became part of the Centre for Culture Drniš and was named Muzej Drniške krajine (Drniš Region Museum). The exhibition halls were built around 1983, on the hundredth anniversary of Meštrović’s birth. During the Homeland War the building and the collections were devastated, the library was destroyed, and many of Meštrović’s works and other objects were stolen.
The new permanent display opened in August 2023. Almost 900 objects are shown on about 450 square metres. The museum holds a geological-palaeontological, archaeological and cultural-historical collection, the Ivan Meštrović collection, a collection of weapons and military equipment, old books up to 1860, postcards, maps, prints and photographs, contemporary art, and coins, medals and decorations. Since 2025 the permanent display has been supplemented by a web-mobile audio guide that opens with a QR code.
