About the museum
The Barone Fortress was built in 1646, at the same time as the nearby St John's Fortress (Tvrđava sv. Ivana), by the German baron Christoph Martin von Degenfeld, after whom it is named. It was erected during the Cretan War, when Šibenik under Venetian rule was preparing for an Ottoman attack.
Together with St John's Fortress, it played a key role in the defence of the town in 1647, when a large attack by the Ottoman army was repelled.
Today the fortress is a venue for cultural events: in summer the Barone Jazz Festival and an open-air cinema are held there, and the café offers a view of the sunset. On the upper level, visitors experience the defence of the town in 1647 with augmented reality devices and an audio guide (free of charge); the augmented reality points are also accessible to people with disabilities.
