About the museum

The museum originated as the Galerija Studin, entered in the court register in 1988. It was housed in the Ćipiko Tower in Kaštel Novi and held works by the sculptor Marin Studin, which, at the artist’s wish, were transferred to his home area. From 1988 to 1991 an archaeological, ethnographic and cultural-historical collection was formed, and in 1991 the gallery became the Zavičajni muzej Kaštela (Local Heritage Museum of Kaštela). In 1999 it was re-registered as the Muzej grada Kaštela.

After Kaštela received town status, the permanent display was set up in the restored Vitturi Castle in Kaštel Lukšić, one of the most important historic buildings of the area. Since 2011 the museum has also operated in the Nadbiskupski kaštel (Archbishop’s Castle) in Kaštel Sućurac, where the Zavičajna zbirka Kaštel Sućurca and the archaeological department are housed. The Studin collection was withdrawn from the Ćipiko Tower in 2001, because the building was returned to its former owner, and is now kept in storage.

The permanent display shows the everyday life, customs and identity of the Kaštela families across different periods, with objects, documents, photographs and works of art that speak of the maritime and trading traditions and the local cultural heritage.
