About the museum
The Muzej vode (Water Museum) opened in 2021 in the old neoclassical waterworks building. The building was constructed in 1879 as part of the renovation of Diocletian's Aqueduct (Dioklecijanov vodovod), to a design by Jakov Antonelli, from white Brač stone. Its stone ornaments were made by the renowned stonemasonry firm Dall’Ara of Milan, where the Monumentalna fontana (Monumental Fountain) of Split was also carved. In the middle of the upper part of the façade is a medallion with the only depiction of Emperor Diocletian in Split.
When the water pumping station in Kopilica was built in 1931, the old reservoir lost its original purpose and until recently was used as an office where citizens paid their water bills. The building was transformed into an exhibition space by the Muzej grada Splita in cooperation with the municipal company Vodovod i kanalizacija.
