About the museum
The Muzej hrvatskih arheoloških spomenika was founded on 24 August 1893 in Knin under the name Prvi muzej hrvatskih spomenika (First Museum of Croatian Monuments), with the aim of preserving the medieval archaeological heritage of the Croats. Thanks to the efforts of the Franciscan Luka Marun, a large number of monuments had already been collected; they were kept in the Monastery of St Anthony in Knin. As the collection grew, in 1912 the museum moved to the neighbouring house Fontana, and in 1933 to a house at the Knin fortress, specially adapted for the purpose.
During the Second World War, director Stjepan Gunjača secretly moved the monuments to Sinj, where they remained until 1945. The building from which they had been removed was destroyed in an air raid as early as 1943. After the war the material ended up in the Galerija Meštrović in Split, and in 1955 in the storerooms of a former cement factory on the western shore of the port of Split, where the permanent display was open from 1958 to 1960.
The building at its present location, in the Meje quarter of Split, was built to designs by Mladen Kauzlarić and ceremonially opened on 5 December 1976; the permanent display opened on 25 July 1978. The museum holds about 20,000 objects of Old Croatian heritage, of which about a quarter is on permanent display. The collection of early medieval interlace and figural sculpture and of Latin Old Croatian epigraphic monuments is among the largest of its kind in Europe.
