About the museum
The Prirodoslovni muzej i zoološki vrt grada Splita (Natural History Museum and Zoo of the City of Split) is a municipal institution founded in 1924. The museum holds the natural history collections of Dalmatia, and alongside it operates a zoo on the wooded Marjan hill above the city.
The museum’s collections cover zoological, botanical and geological material: collections of fish, crustaceans, polychaetes, bivalves and snails, insects, mammals, reptiles and amphibians, a herbarium, and a collection of fungi. Professional staff survey the terrain in Dalmatia and on the islands, and the finds they collect enter the collections.
In the permanent display the Malakološka zbirka obitelji Bakoti (Bakoti Family Malacological Collection) has a special place; in a recent renovation of the exhibition space it received new lighting, a display case and labels. Alongside it are specimens from the fish collection, among them sturgeon, grouper and turbot, as well as large photographs of marine animals. During the year the museum holds educational workshops for pupils and kindergarten groups, summer workshops, and also offers birthday parties.
