About the museum

The Muzej grada Šibenika (Šibenik City Museum) was founded in 1925 on the initiative of Don Krsto Stošić, who believed that Šibenik must have its own museum. After the Second World War the museum was restored by Frane Dujmović, and the long-serving director Slave Grubišić developed it into a major cultural institution. The museum’s first century of work was marked in 2025 by the exhibition “Naših prvih sto” (“Our First Hundred”) and a photo monograph.

The museum is housed in the Kneževa palača (Prince’s Palace), the former seat of the town’s prince. The palace was built and reshaped between the 13th and 18th centuries, so that a large part of its interior has lost its original appearance. The permanent display occupies the atrium and the south wing and presents the history of the town and its surroundings from the 6th millennium BC to 1797, when Venetian rule ended.

In the atrium are archaeological finds from some fifty sites in the Šibenik area, arranged from prehistory through antiquity and late antiquity to the Middle Ages. On the ground floor of the south wing the period from the Croatian rulers to the early 15th century follows, and on the upper floor are Baroque art, Humanism, music, and fortresses and wars. The museum has archaeological, ethnographic, cultural-historical, conservation-restoration and recent history departments.
