About the museum
The Muzej svetog Frane is located in the courtyard of the Conventual Franciscan monastery in the heart of Šibenik's historic core. The same courtyard holds a side entrance to the church and a kind of extension of the museum: a small enclosed garden with a lapidarium of stone fragments. The Franciscans have been present in Šibenik since the 13th century.
The most valuable part of the monastery is its library, one of the five most valuable heritage libraries in Croatia, and access to it is possible only with special permission. For this reason, its contents are presented in the museum in a contemporary way: incunabula, codices, parchments and rare books, among them the Šibenska molitva (Šibenik Prayer) from the 14th century, one of the oldest Croatian language and literary monuments written in Latin script.
Gothic and Baroque reliquaries, altar paintings and other objects are also on display. The monastery's musical tradition is presented in four sections: organ, the Šibenska molitva, choral singing and motets by Ivan Lukačić. A special place is held by the leather sandals of St Nikola Tavelić, the first Croatian saint from Šibenik, which were sent to the monastery by the guardian of the Franciscan monastery in Jerusalem.
