About the museum

The museum opened in 1966 in the birth house of Ljudevit Gaj, who was born in Krapina on 8 July 1809. His father, Ivan, was a pharmacist in Krapina, and his mother, Julijana, née Schmit, was fairly well educated for her time. In the Gaj house during his childhood, German was spoken.

In 1830, in Budim, Gaj published the “Kratku osnovu horvatsko-slavenskog pravopisanja” (Short Basis of Croatian-Slavonic Orthography), which laid the foundations of the orthographic reform. From 1835 he published the Novine horvatske and the literary supplement Danica. Modelled on the Czech Latin alphabet, he created signs for the individual sounds, and this script became known as gajica.

The museum displays his furniture, portraits of Gaj and his family painted by Ivan Tišov, Mihael Stroj and Josip Franjo Mücke, photocopies of manuscripts, printed texts, books and brochures, and the newspapers and magazines that he edited and published.
