About the museum

At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries Count Franjo Vojkffy married a member of the Sermage family from Sveti Križ Začretje and thus became the owner of the castle and estate. He was a very active landowner: he added a southern wing to the castle, a small tower and several farm buildings. Among them stands out the granary built in 1796, designed so that air flowed through it all year round without special ventilation.

The building was renovated in 1998 thanks to the Općina Sveti Križ Začretje (Municipality of Sveti Križ Začretje) and the Ministarstvo kulture (Ministry of Culture), and was saved from decay. It was ceremonially opened to visitors on Municipality Day, 14 September 2000.

On the ground floor are the exhibitions of the ethnographic group “Zvirek”: “Od konoplje do narodne nošnje” (From Hemp to Folk Costume), “Hiža moje bake” (My Grandmother's House) and “Božić” (Christmas). On the upper floor is the Galerija “Ivan Lovrenčić“, with works that the painter gave to his native village: 16 paintings, 30 drawings and 53 prints. Since 2002 the gallery has also had a piano, so concerts are held in the space.
