About the museum
Muzej Radboa was founded in 2015 and opened to visitors on 27 June 2017. It is housed on the ground floor of the old school, built in 1900, which has been renovated since 2009 and later underwent energy renovation. The permanent display covers about 140 m² in two rooms and presents Radoboj through three collections with multimedia features.
The mining collection shows the history of the area, which begins with the discovery of native sulphur at the start of the 19th century. The “sulphur” era lasted more than a hundred years and supplied the Austro-Hungarian economy. At the Radoboj sulphur mine, a machine for refining sulphur was first used, widely known as the Radobojski stroj (Radoboj machine). In 1833 the miners founded a mining school. Later, brown coal was also mined at the “Mirna” coal mine, whose coal was transported by cableway to Krapina.
The geological collection holds fossil flora and fauna 12 to 14 million years old, mostly leaf imprints and rare fossil insects. Among them is a fossil imprint of a grapevine leaf, the oldest known example of this species in this part of Europe. The archaeological collection includes finds from an Iron Age necropolis under burial mounds at Podstenje, Celtic gold coins and objects from prehistoric hilltop settlements such as Hajdina zerna.
