About the museum
The museum’s origins rest on the first contract between Matija Skurjeni and the Municipal Assembly of Zaprešić, signed on 2 July 1984. The initiators of the gift agreement were the naive artist Matija Skurjeni and Professor Milka Kobešćak, the painter’s long-time collaborator. The Galerija Matija Skurjeni opened on 15 July 1987 in Novi dvori in Zaprešić, and in the same year Skurjeni was made an honorary citizen of Zaprešić.
On 20 November 2000 the Ministry of Culture approved the conversion of the gallery into the Muzej Matija Skurjeni, with a permanent display covering his entire creative oeuvre, from the earliest to the latest works. The art critic Vladimir Maleković was the expert author of the gallery concept, the permanent display and the guide. In 2000 Milka Kobešćak donated her collection of paintings, drawings and prints by bequest.
Matija Skurjeni was born on 14 December 1898 in Veternica near Zlatar, the seventh child in his family. As a child he was a shepherd; later he worked as a railway track worker and learned the trade of house painter. The museum displays his most important works: oil paintings on canvas, drawings and prints.
