About the museum
The Muzej Brdovec was founded in 1973 at the Narodno sveučilište Zaprešić as a local heritage museum for the area of the former municipality of Zaprešić. It was set up for the 400th anniversary of the peasant revolt, thanks to local enthusiasts including Drago Jančić and Marijan Mikuljan; the most important contributor was the art historian and museologist Vladimir Maleković, born in Brdovec. The museum collects and researches material from the western slopes of Medvednica to the Sutla River.
The museum is housed in a two-storey Art Nouveau building from the early 20th century which, together with its plot, was declared a protected cultural monument in 2017. The permanent display on the upper floor covers about 200 m². The Izložbeni salon Vladimir Maleković is on the ground floor. Of the six collections, only four are on display due to lack of space: geological-palaeontological, archaeological, cultural-historical and ethnographic.
The archaeological collection is known above all for finds from Sveti Križ from the Iron Age, including a prince’s grave with the deceased buried together with a horse, and a bronze helmet, as well as objects from the Roman villa rustica in Drenje. The geological collection is characterised by finds from Marija Gorica, including teeth of Deinotherium giganteum, a prehistoric elephant species, from 1912. The cultural-historical collection holds furniture and paintings from surrounding castles, and part of the ethnographic collection is displayed in a wooden house from 1891 and in the granary in the museum courtyard.
