About the museum
The Samoborski muzej (Samobor Museum) was founded on 23 June 1949, largely thanks to Ivica Sudnik (1910–2002), a lover of history and antiques, mountaineer, photographer, journalist, watchmaker and tireless collector of objects connected with Samobor's past. His three collections – “Samoborska bibliografija”, “Samoborska kronika” and “Samoborske starine” – formed the foundation of the future museum.
Part of the museum was housed in the former family house of Ferdo Livadić, the well-known Croatian composer, mayor of Samobor and national revivalist. At first two rooms on the ground floor were allocated to it in 1948, and a year later the entire first floor. The first two floors of Livadić Castle are devoted to the permanent display, and the attic to gallery space.
The museum holds 13 collections, among them geological, archaeological, ethnographic, historical, mountaineering, cultural-historical and art collections, as well as collections of old and rare books, postcards, photographs and glass. In May 2024 the castle was closed for energy renovation, and the museum now also includes Villa Allnoch on Starogradska Street, where a gallery has opened.
