About the museum
Muzej suvremene umjetnosti Istre (Museum of Contemporary Art of Istria) was founded in 2008 by Istria County as a regional museum and gallery institution. It systematically collects, preserves, researches and exhibits contemporary art and follows new forms of artistic expression, with particular attention to Istrian artists, whose works form the backbone of the collections. The museum presents itself as an open meeting place of multiculturalism, where artists from all over the world often exhibit, and their works are also purchased.
Since 2011 the museum has been housed in the historic building at Sv. Ivana 1 in Pula, built in the second half of the 19th century for military purposes, together with the Gradska knjižnica i čitaonica Pula (Pula City Library and Reading Room) and the Istrian branches of the Društvo hrvatskih književnika (Croatian Writers’ Society). The building covers 3,500 m² on two floors and in the attic, and is undergoing gradual adaptation.
The collection is divided into eight collections: painting, drawings, prints and works on paper, sculpture, photography, posters and design, film, video and new media art, foreign art, and special collections. The annual exhibition programme is complemented by educational and discussion programmes and by the MSUI pozornica platform, and the museum also publishes its own publications.
