About the museum
The tunnels were dug during the First World War as air-raid shelters. The system comprises shelters, trenches, galleries, passages, ammunition stores and communication corridors that run beneath much of the town centre. The largest tunnels are located beneath the hills of Monte Zaro, Monte Ghiro and Kaštel.
Four entrances on different sides of the foot of the hill below Kaštel lead through underground passages to a central space where they meet. The entrances are shaped so that air constantly circulates through the system. The site is run by the Povijesni i pomorski muzej Istre (Historical and Maritime Museum of Istria).
