About the museum
The Povijesni i pomorski muzej Istre was founded in 1955 as the regional museum of Istria County. It is located in the Kaštel, a Baroque Venetian fortress from the 17th century on Pula’s central hill, which the Republic of Venice built to defend its possessions in southern Istria, above the Nimfej spring of drinking water. On the hill there was a prehistoric settlement called Histra in the first millennium BC, and the Romans probably built a military camp there. In the Middle Ages the fortress was administered by the noble Sergi family (Castropola), until the Venetian conquest of the city in 1331.
The museum’s holdings comprise more than 100,000 objects of cultural-historical, political, military and ethnographic character in 18 collections, including collections on maritime affairs and shipbuilding, weapons and military equipment, posters, postcards, photographs and a numismatic collection. The educational department has operated since 2009, and in summer the museum’s courtyard hosts cultural events, film screenings and concerts.
The permanent exhibition shows the history of pharmacy. It was created from objects of the pharmacy of the former Imperial and Royal Naval Hospital from 1861, which the museum took over in 1991 and exhibited in 2005. The display includes more than six hundred objects, original mahogany furniture of the period and simulated prescription tables. Since 2011 the museum has managed the Zerostrasse underground tunnels, and since 2015 the visitor centre Herman Potočnik Noordung and the House of Frescoes in Draguć.
