About the museum
Dioklecijanova palača (Diocletian's Palace) in Split is one of the best-preserved examples of late antique architecture. It was built in a time of instability, between 295 and 305, as a fortified and magnificent imperial residence. The northern half of the complex was intended for the army and servants, and the southern half for the emperor's residence and ceremonies.
Centuries of later building erased the original ground plan of the upper floor, but the cellars (substructures) in the southern part of the palace preserved the shape and layout of the emperor's private apartments. The halls levelled the southern part of the terrain towards the higher northern part, served as a load-bearing base for the imperial chambers, and also protected them from sea and groundwater damp. From the Middle Ages the halls were gradually filled with waste and building material from the upper floors.
The western part of the cellars was opened to the public in 1959, and the eastern halls were first seen by visitors in 1996, after extensive conservation works. Diocletian's Palace was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1979. The cellars are managed by the Muzej grada Splita (City Museum of Split).
