About the museum
The castle in the harbour of Komiža was built at the end of the 16th century, and the inscription above the door, with the coat of arms of the Venetian provveditore (governor) Giovanni Grimani, gives the year 1585. It stands on a small peninsular rise in the harbour and was once surrounded by the sea on its north and west sides, which is why stone mooring rings for sailing boats have been preserved along the walls. The walls end in a rounded cornice with double corbels.
After the Austrians disarmed the island of Vis, the Komiža municipality bought the castle in 1879 and housed its administration in it; a tower with a town clock was built at the north-eastern corner. Today the castle houses the Ribarski muzej (Fisheries Museum), which preserves objects related to the fishing of Komiža.
