About the museum
The Zavičajni muzej grada Visa is housed in the Gospina baterija fortress, built in 1841 in the middle of the sv. Juraj bay as the town’s main fortification during the Austrian administration. The fortress played an important role in the Viški boj (Battle of Vis) on 19 July 1866, when the Italian ironclad Formidabile entered the port of Vis. After the engagement with the fortress, in which the ship suffered losses and a fire broke out on board, the Italians withdrew.
The museum use of the fortress began in 1964 with the establishment of the Memorial Museum of the Supreme Headquarters of the National Liberation Army and Partisan Detachments of Yugoslavia (Memorijalni muzej Vrhovnog štaba Narodnooslobodilačke vojske i partizanskih odreda Jugoslavije). From 1983, the Issa Archaeological Collection operated on the upper floor as a branch of the Arheološki muzej u Splitu (Archaeological Museum in Split). The Zavičajni muzej grada Visa was founded in 2023 and began work on 1 January 2025. The hydroarchaeological collection has been reopened, additional exhibition space has been set up, and the museum collects and documents material, researches the island’s topography, and organises lectures and workshops.
The museum is also involved in projects around ancient Issa, the oldest town on the eastern Adriatic coast, including the land and underwater trail of the future archaeological park.
