About the museum
The present church was built from 1760 to 1800 on the site of a basilica, probably from the 11th century, which was demolished in 1760. It was modelled on the Church of St Peter in Venice and is one of the largest and most important churches in Istria. It holds the relics of St Blaise and around 370 other relics of about 250 saints, which arrived from Venice in 1818. Around 15,000 visitors come to the church each year.
The collection of sacred art, which according to the description of the Tourist Board is the most significant in Croatia, has around 730 objects from the period from the year 400 to the 19th century: stone reliefs, about 15 paintings, about 15 sculptures, about 100 reliquaries, books and manuscripts, jewellery and liturgical vestments. Among the objects are 234 reliquaries from the 16th to 19th centuries, as well as church silverware and fittings.
