About the museum

Chotěbuz-Podobora is one of the most important prehistoric and early medieval monuments of Těšínské Slezsko (Cieszyn Silesia). Archaeological excavations uncovered remains of a bicultural settlement from the Late Bronze Age and the Hallstatt period, and later an early medieval Slavic fortification was built on the same site. On a river terrace above the Olše river stood an extensive three-part hillfort.

On this site the Muzeum Těšínska built the archaeopark, where replicas of early medieval buildings stand, made according to finds from Chotěbuz and surrounding hillforts: earth dwellings and sunken-floor dwellings, a log cabin, a hall building, a cult object and an iron-smelting furnace. A massive rampart surrounds the old acropolis, and a separate ceramics workshop with a potter’s wheel and a kiln serves school and public events. The modern entrance building with an interactive exhibition opened in 2015.

The archaeopark is a branch of the Muzeum Těšínska. It offers guided tours, educational programmes for schools and families, bicycle hire for the Toulky údolím Olše routes, and a range of seasonal events, for example International Archaeology Day.
