About the museum
The Muzeum Těšínska in Český Těšín was restored after the war in June 1948 by the teacher and local-history researcher Ladislav Báča, who became its first curator. Its collection was founded on confiscated items, gifts from residents of the Czech part of Těšín, part of the furnishings of the Ropice and Hnojník castles and rescued holdings of the Jablunkov museum. From 1957 the museum has published the local-history journal Těšínsko.
Over time up to eleven branches were established, and in 2005 the Archeopark in Chotěbuz-Podobořě was added. The storerooms hold more than 200,000 objects, including a complete collection of silver Těšín folk costume jewellery, folk sculpture and painted chests from 1700 onwards; the museum also includes the study library Silesia.
The historic building on Hlavní třída was built in 1885–1886 as the private house of architect Alois Jedek. The museum obtained the ground-floor premises in 1951. After reconstruction in 2018–2019 the building reopened in mid-2020, and today it houses a permanent exhibition with more than 1,200 exhibits, supplemented by animations, projections and touch screens.
