About the museum

The Museum of Protestantism operates at the Evangelical-Augsburg Parish in Cieszyn and is the direct successor of the Tschammer Library (Biblioteka Tschammera), which has existed since the 17th century. The parish owns rich library, archival and museum collections, which bear witness to the centuries-long cultural and social activity of the Lutherans. The institution’s task is to gather, study, protect and popularise the heritage of the Reformation in Polish lands, with particular emphasis on Cieszyn Silesia.

The museum opened on 29 March 2009, thanks to funding from the EEA Financial Mechanism for a project on the protection and conservation of Cieszyn’s literary heritage. Its seat is the Church of Jesus, the largest Evangelical church in Poland, built under the Altranstädt Agreement of 1707, and the exhibition is located on its balcony.

The exhibition shows documents, photographs, publications and liturgical vessels, including a liturgical tin from 1712. Among the most valuable exhibits are the imperial eagle with the image of Joseph I, from the ‘laska łaski’ (staff of grace), which in 1709 marked the site for the construction of the church, and the armchair on which Emperor Franz Joseph I sat during his visit to the town.
