About the museum
Břevnov Monastery (Břevnovský klášter) was founded in 993 by Duke Boleslaus II and the Prague bishop St Adalbert (Vojtěch). Adalbert, who had got to know Benedictine monasteries in Italy, brought the first community of monks to Bohemia from Niederaltaich in Lower Bavaria. According to legend, the monastery was founded at the spring of the Brusnice, where Adalbert removed a beam that prevented animals from drinking, which is how the place got its name.
The monastery became a centre of spiritual life, learning and the economy. The present Baroque complex was built in the 18th century to designs by Kryštof and Kilián Ignác Dientzenhofer and is protected as a national cultural monument. In 1993 Pope John Paul II raised the Břevnov monastery to the rank of archabbey.
Guided tours, given either by a guide or directly by one of the monks who live here, go through St Margaret’s Basilica, the 11th-century Romanesque crypt and the representative rooms of the prelature, including the Theresian Hall. The site, covering about 12 hectares, is also used for culture, accommodation, restaurants, weddings and concerts. It is managed by the company Správa břevnovského kláštera s.r.o., in cooperation with the archabbey.
