About the museum
Rothmayer Villa is a two-storey family house that the architect Otto Rothmayer (1892–1966) built for himself in 1928 and 1929. Rothmayer trained as a joiner with his father, and from 1912 to 1920 he studied at the Prague School of Applied Arts under Jože Plečnik. The influence of Mediterranean architecture, which Plečnik brought to Czechoslovakia, is visible in the house.
The house stands in a garden that Josef Sudek often photographed. The villa is furnished with objects from the architect’s collection; on the spiral staircase are artefacts from Prague Castle that Rothmayer brought home from his work. His wife, the textile artist Božena Rothmayerová, also had a studio in the villa.
Today the house is run by the Museum of the City of Prague and is open to visits with a guide by prior reservation. The garden is closed in winter; during the season it can be seen only on a guided tour.
