About the museum
The building in which the museum is housed was built by Autosportklub Praha. The club was founded in the 1960s and was one of the clubs with the highest number of active racing drivers in Czechoslovakia; its drivers then mostly raced Trabant cars. The club cooperated with the factory in Zwickau, Germany, where the Trabants were produced.
The exhibition presents the complete production history of Trabant cars, from the predecessor AWZ P70 of 1954, through the P 60 (600) and the most widespread Trabant 601, to the four-stroke Trabant 1.1 with a Volkswagen Polo engine, with which production ended in 1991. According to the museum, a total of 3,096,099 cars of all versions were produced. The cars on display are in their original preserved condition.
Visitors can also see a fully equipped period garage with a racing Trabant under repair, a partly cut-open car in which they can try out sitting, steering and gear-changing, and a military Trabant Kübel. At the end of the tour, everyday objects from the former GDR are on display, from toys and electronics to toiletries and drink bottles. For children there is a racing track with Trabant models and a working model train that carries the Trabants produced.
