About the museum

The villa was commissioned in 1928 by the industrialist František Müller, co-owner of a major Czechoslovak construction company. He first approached the architect Karel Lhota, through whom Adolf Loos joined the project; on 30 October 1928 Müller signed a contract with both architects. Lhota prepared the first sketches, but Loos substantially reworked them and changed the interior layout and the façade. The Prague municipal authorities initially refused to approve the building; after repeated appeals, the client obtained permission in June 1929, and the family moved into the completed house on 5 April 1930.

After 1948 the state seized the villa, and in 1955 it became state property; it served as a storage depot for applied art of the National Gallery. The builder’s wife, Milada Müllerová, remained in a small flat in the villa and carefully documented the condition of the house, its furnishings and the original use of the rooms, which later helped identify many original objects. After 1989 the City of Prague bought the villa, and since 1995 it has been managed by the Prague City Museum. After restoration to the original plans and period photographs, it opened to the public as a museum in 2000; in 1995 it had been declared a national cultural monument.

After almost two years of reconstruction (closed since February 2025), the villa reopened on 1 October 2026. The new tour route leads from the operational and technical areas up to the highest floors and, for the first time, includes spaces that were previously not accessible, such as the parlour, guest rooms and servants’ quarters, bathrooms and the boiler room. The house is known for its raumplan: the rooms are at different heights and connected by stairs.
