About the museum
Popmuseum is an independent association focused on Czech and Slovak popular music. It brings together people interested in material, sound, written, pictorial and audiovisual records of its history, and it seeks to replace at least some of the functions of a state museum and archive of popular music, which does not exist in the Czech Republic. It has been registered as a legal entity since 10 November 1998 and has been listed as an association since 2014.
Its seat and exhibition spaces are in the Kaštan cultural centre on Bělohorská Street in Břevnov, Prague. The collections and documents gathered by the association are stored in a depository in Horní Počernice, and researchers can consult them at the museum’s seat. The association also has a branch in Brno, Poparchiv, where an electronic archive was created and where gramophone records and sleeves are kept.
The permanent exhibition mainly presents electric guitars made in Czechoslovakia and selected keyboard instruments used in the former Czechoslovakia. Other rooms host short-term thematic exhibitions, which often extend into the entrance hall, the staircase and the bar on the first floor of Kaštan. Visitors can try interactive music software games, karaoke and playing real electric instruments. The museum also holds concerts, lectures and workshops.
