About the museum
Hrad Červený Újezd, in a village near Unhošť, does not stand on medieval foundations. It was built in 2001 and 2002 as a historicist structure in the style of a knightly fortified manor, so that the extensive private collection of its owner could be displayed in it. It is therefore a modern building that combines Gothic and Renaissance elements and was constructed using traditional craft techniques.
Inside is the Muzeum českého venkova. The permanent exhibition comprises about 4,000 objects from the Czech Republic and Slovakia and illustrates everyday rural life from the 17th to the 20th century. Tours are led by a guide and last about 50 minutes; the guides prepare commentary for all age groups, including kindergartens and primary schools.
The castle also has a garden with a selection of plants and an open-air museum: a replica windmill, a hop-drying kiln, a bell tower, wine cellars and other buildings, most of which have accessible interiors. The site has a restaurant, Krčma, in the style of the late Middle Ages, which can be visited without a museum ticket. The castle also hosts weddings and corporate events, so the grounds may be closed on some days.
