About the museum

The deanery church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Polná is the largest of the four churches in Polná and a national cultural monument. It was built in 1700–1707 to plans by the Italian master Domenico de Angeli, on the site of a demolished Gothic church of Our Lady; the construction was financed by the estate owner Leopold Ditrichštejn. The stucco and fresco decoration was completed by the painter Luca Antonio Colomba and the stuccoist Giacomo Antonio Corbellini.

The first church museum in the Vysočina region, and in the Hradec Králové diocese, is housed in the attic spaces and on the galleries above the nave of the church. The tour route leads past paintings, sculptures, liturgical objects and musical instruments; the choir loft with an organ from 1708 can also be seen. On the way to the tower visitors pass an exhibition on Polná’s bells and a period-furnished bell-ringer’s flat; from the tower there is a view over the Vysočina.

The church and museum are opened to visitors by the Roman Catholic parish, the Polná deanery, through the church’s information centre. During the visit, visitors follow the house rules and the instructions of the guide.
