About the museum
The Muzeum kutilství (Museum of Home Tinkering) in Polná was founded in 2011 from the collection of Milan Říha, who has been gathering homemade products since 2007. It recalls the time before 1989, when people in Czechoslovakia made many everyday things themselves, because they could not be bought or were hard to obtain. Materials and parts were sourced unofficially, and tinkerers often showed great ingenuity by using objects originally intended for other purposes.
The collection now numbers more than 900 exhibits and is still growing. Each item has an information sheet with a description of how it was made, the year of production and the name of the maker. The collection includes, for example, lawnmowers, circular saws, car battery chargers, electric welders, garden tractors and even amateur-built passenger cars.
The collection also travels to exhibitions in other towns, so it is shown outside Polná as well. The operator is still looking for new exhibits and invites tinkerers to donate their products to the museum.
