About the museum
The Citerárium, officially the Czech Zither Cultural Centre, has been run since 2002 by the Ostrava Radegast Zither Club. Its main focus is the permanent museum exhibition entitled “Citera v Čechách, na Moravě a ve Slezsku” (“The Zither in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia”). The centre also teaches zither playing, holds regular club meetings, archives sheet music, organises performances and seminars, and publishes.
Around the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, the zither was very widespread in the Czech lands, and numerous zither clubs were founded; the first Prague club was established in 1875. The exhibition commemorates this tradition. The centre’s activities also include a catalogue of its depository holding 555 zithers and a monograph on zithers in Bohemia, Moravia and Silesia.
The exhibition has been run without subsidies since 2009, or rather 2010, yet it has been kept in its original scope. The centre is located on Masarykovo náměstí in Ostrava. Visits must be arranged in advance by telephone.
